Pregnancy-Safe Skincare: A Trimester-by-Trimester Routine
A Trimester-by-Trimester Routine
Skincare during pregnancy isn’t about giving everything up. It’s about using the right things — and Turimere is the only line where every formula is pregnancy-safe by default. Here’s what to use, what to avoid, and how the routine evolves across all three trimesters and postpartum.
Shop Pregnancy-SafeWhat “pregnancy-safe” actually means
Pregnancy-safe means an ingredient has no evidence of harm to a developing fetus when applied topically at typical concentrations. It doesn’t mean “maybe okay” or “studied a little.” It means the active is well-tolerated and not flagged by OB-GYN or dermatology guidelines for pregnancy use.
The entire Turimere line meets that bar. Not a separate edition. Not an asterisk. Every product. Every active. Every life stage.
The actives to drop during pregnancy
Pause these during pregnancy & breastfeeding
- Retinoids (retinol, retinaldehyde, prescription tretinoin, isotretinoin) — absolute no
- Hydroquinone — absolute no
- High-strength salicylic acid (above 2%) — no; below 2% generally considered safe but check with provider
- High-strength benzoyl peroxide — ask your OB
- Certain essential oils at high concentration (rosemary, sage, clary sage especially)
- Hydroxy acids in aggressive concentrations — low-dose generally fine; high-strength peels are not
- Aluminum-based deodorants — industry debate; many OBs recommend switching during pregnancy
This list is why pregnant women are usually told to “stop using skincare with actives.” It’s overly cautious advice. You don’t have to give up actives. You have to choose actives that are pregnancy-safe.
The routine, trimester by trimester
Months 1–3: Calm and gentle
Hormonal shifts begin. Many women experience nausea, fatigue, and skin sensitivity. Some break out; others get sudden glow. Both are normal.
Focus: Don’t add new actives. Strengthen barrier. Hydrate.
- AM: Gentle cleanser, Turmeric Luxe Brightening Butter as moisturizer, mineral SPF
- PM: Same cleanser, Butter again. That’s it.
- Body: Butter on belly, hips, breasts to support skin elasticity as it stretches. Turmeric Luxe Scrub 2x weekly in shower — safe to use throughout pregnancy.
Months 4–6: Introduce Vitamin C
Energy returns for most. Melasma (the “pregnancy mask”) often starts showing on cheeks and forehead. Linea nigra appears on the belly. Both are hormonal pigmentation.
Focus: Address pigmentation before it deepens. Introduce stable Vitamin C.
- AM: Cleanser, 20% Vitamin C Ampoule (3-O-EAA — pregnancy-safe), Butter as moisturizer, mineral SPF
- PM: Cleanser, Butter. Cleansing Pads 2x weekly on melasma zones if comfortable.
- Body: Butter on full body daily. Scrub 2x weekly. Underarm Ritual if zone-specific brightening is needed.
Months 7–9: Comfort and stretch support
Belly skin stretches significantly. Itching is common. Melasma may peak. Hormones at maximum.
Focus: Aggressive moisture for belly, hips, breasts. Continue brightening but don’t expect huge fading until hormones drop postpartum.
- AM: Cleanser, Vitamin C Ampoule, Butter, mineral SPF
- PM: Cleanser, Butter (apply 2x to dry zones — belly, hips, breasts)
- Body: Butter morning AND night on belly/hips. Scrub 2x weekly. The niacinamide that brightens also supports skin elasticity.
After birth: Reset and recover
Hormones drop. Melasma starts fading on its own — but the active fade can be accelerated. Linea nigra often takes 6–18 months to fully resolve without intervention; the right protocol cuts that significantly.
Focus: Reactivate full brightening protocol. Address what pregnancy left behind.
- Continue the full Turimere line — everything in it is breastfeeding-safe. Butter, Cleansing Pads, Vit C Ampoule, Turmeric Luxe Scrub, Underarm Ritual: all fine.
- One nursing-specific note: while breastfeeding, avoid applying the Scrub directly to the nipple/areola area. The exfoliant residue can leave a salty taste your baby may notice during feeds. Apply Scrub on everywhere else — belly, hips, thighs, arms — normally.
- For linea nigra specifically: daily Butter application; targeted brightening shows results in 6–8 weeks.
- Once breastfeeding done: if you want to introduce non-Turimere actives (retinol, prescription tretinoin, hydroquinone), now’s when they’re safe again. Most users find the Turimere protocol sufficient long-term.
Built for the pregnant user from day one
Most premium skincare brands have a “pregnancy edit” or asterisks throughout their main line. Turimere is built so the whole line works during pregnancy. Eleven products. Zero asterisks. Same formulas pregnant, breastfeeding, and not.
If a skincare brand has to put an asterisk next to its actives for pregnant women, that brand wasn’t built for everyone.
Turimere was built for everyone. Pregnant. Postpartum. Melanin-rich. Sensitive. All life stages.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep using my regular skincare during pregnancy?
Check every product for retinoids, hydroquinone, high-strength salicylic acid, and pregnancy-flagged essential oils. If your line has any of those, pause those specific products and substitute with Turimere equivalents.
Is the 20% Vitamin C Ampoule safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Our ampoules use 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid — a stable form of Vitamin C that’s pH-neutral and pregnancy-safe.
Can I use the Turmeric Luxe Scrub during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Yes throughout pregnancy and while breastfeeding — apply normally on belly, hips, thighs, arms, and back. The only restriction: while breastfeeding, avoid the nipple and areola area. The exfoliant residue can leave a salty taste your baby may notice during feeds.
What about melasma? Will Turimere fade it during pregnancy?
Partially. While hormones are active during pregnancy, melasma is harder to fully fade. Most significant fading happens postpartum when hormones normalize.
Should I switch to mineral sunscreen during pregnancy?
Yes. Mineral SPF (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) is preferred. Daily SPF is also the most important step for managing melasma and linea nigra.
Can I do the Underarm + Bikini Ritual during pregnancy?
Yes. The whole ritual is pregnancy and breastfeeding safe.
Is the entire Turimere line really safe during breastfeeding?
Yes. We designed the line so a nursing mother can use anything in it. The only nursing-specific caveat is avoiding the Scrub on the nipple area to prevent salty residue baby could taste.
The whole line. Built for the pregnant user.
No retinoids. No hydroquinone. No asterisks. The same formulas trusted across all three trimesters, breastfeeding, and postpartum.
